A client recently shared an article with me from The NY Times about Intuitive Eating. This article peaked my curiosity and led me to read Evelyn Tribole’s book on my kindle called Intuitive Eating, and ordering her Daily Inspirations book in paperback. There’s a lot to be learned from these two books, much of it resonates with me deeply. It leads me to think more about this question, how do we find our way with food and feeling good in our body living in a world that praises thinness and diet culture?
While there is much to be discussed on the topic of Intuitive Eating, in this post, I would like to share with you one of the aha moments I experienced while reading the book “Intuitive Eating For Every Day: 365 Daily Practices and Inspirations To Rediscover The Pleasure Of Eating”.
She asked the question, how often do we check our phones? How often are we looking for the alerts, notifications, texts, missed calls, etc? What if we imagined that our body sends us alerts and notifications? How often do we check in with our body and notice what its telling us? Are we hungry? Full? Thirsty? Need to pee? How well do we listen to and grant these requests/notifications from our body?
I got to thinking. If I am willing to check my phone numerous times a day, am I also willing to check in with my body for its messages numerous times a day?
So for now I’ve got this routine that I do. When I reach for my phone to see what I’ve missed, I remember to take a breath and a short pause to check in with my body and what it might need. Does it also have a notification for me?
If any of this resonates with you, I will leave you with a few resources. I would also be delighted to hear your feedback either in the comments below or in an email.
